Factors Affecting

Population Distribution

Paris, France (24,783/km²)

Paris is a clustered settlement pattern with many high and low rise buildings.

Access to Other

Communities

  • easily accessible by planes, railroads, and public transportation (buses, subways, and taxi services)
  • two major airports in Paris, the Roissey-Charles de Gaulle and Orly

Climate

  • January is the coldest month of the year, July being the warmest month
  • gets mild winters
  • relatively clement summer (mild)

Physical

Features

  • contains many broad plains, low hills, low plateaus located more west
  • elevated plateaus and high mountains are located more to the south east

Resources

  • agriculture is a widely used resource
  • nuclear power expanded in the 1980's and is still popular to this day
  • renewable sources of energy have gained new prominence this century

Fauske, Norway (9/km²)

Access to Other Communities

  • some forms of transportation include buses and railroads
  • one major railroad (Nordlandsbanen) travels through the municipality

Climate

  • heaviest precipitation from September to December
  • located inside the Arctic circle
  • 24 hours of sun from May to July

Physical Features

  • fjords, mountains, low hills, and woodland cover most
  • some lakes and glaciers

Resources

  • mining is common in Sulitjelma (village in Fauske)
  • marble quarries
  • agriculture is also popular

Communicating Results

  • agriculture is very popular in Paris, this shows land use because humans changed the natural land into a built environment
  • many forms of transportation in Paris show sustainable development, this is because humans developed and met aims for humans needs
  • Fauske is home to many fjords, this shows land reclamation because the ocean is forming reclamation ground
  • mining in Fauske supports many countries with marble quarries, this shows sustainable development by using resources to meet humans needs

Conclusion

Overall, both places would be great to live in. While Fauske is well connected to other countries, Paris has the better access to other communities, climate, physical features, and resources. Paris also has the greater population distribution out of my two chosen places.

Area with high population

Area with low population

Fauske is a scattered settlement pattern because of the small population, and amount of low rise buildings.
