The Manor System

Waste Land

I control the manor, the land of which I received from the king. I have serfs and peasants who work my land to produce food for the manor village. For their work, I provide them a small section of land for themselves- although they have to give me a percentage of their crops. In return for their service, I also provide them with protection through my army of knights.

Noble Lord

I represent the largest group of the lord's workers. I work three days per week on the lord's crops, and I'll do anything else that he requests. As a reward, I get my own small section of land to grow my own crops. However, I give a certain amount of these crops in return for the land. I am free to leave the manor whenever, but I choose to stay because the lord offers protection for me through his knights. While safe from thieves and gangs, my life was still bleak and full of hardships.

Priest's House

I am the man who represents the Catholic Church on the manor. I provide all religious services and needs. This allowed people to stay connected with their faith without having to leave the manor. I am the only person on the manor who is literate. I collect 10% of the income from the peasants and serfs to send to the Bishop who lives in our manor's region.

Priest

I am part of the second largest group of people who work for the lord. My life is almost the same as the peasants'- we preform the same tasks and services for the lord, and receive the same benefits and protection. However, while the peasants are free to come and go between manors, we serfs are tied to the land. We cannot leave, and come with the land if it is sold to another lord. But like the peasants, my quality of life was overall very low.
