HISTORY

Melbourne was founded by free settlers in 1835, 47 years after the first European settlement in Australia, as a pastoral around the Yarra River. Transformed rapidly into a major metropolis of Victoria for the gold rush of 1850, Melbourne became the largest and most important city of Australia.
