MATERIALS

MATERIALS PALETTE

  • All materials used for the construction of the house are locally grown or gathered and the building process makes use of simple tools and construction methods.

ROOF

MATERIALS - MEANINGS

WALL

  • Even the palace of king was constructed from perishable material, e.g. bamboo, wood and palm leaves

FLOOR

  • Stone was deemed worthy only for dwellings of the gods -> temples

MATERIALS

CLIMATE ADAPTATION STRATEGIES

  • Stilt houses have good natural ventilation strategies for passive cooling. Primarily, the house is cooled by the air that passes underneath it and is drawn up into the space
  • floor - made of widely spaced bamboo slats

  • large gap between wall and roof cladding - promotes cross-ventilation / allows warm air to flow out, and forces air to pass through the space from one wall to the other

STRUCTURE

  • wooden structure consisting of posts to support the house above the ground, depending on the maximum water height at that location
  • Monsoon season - the height protects the houses from flood damage
  • Dry season - protects the residents in the home from animals on the ground

VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE

  • “Vernacular architecture had an admirable talent for fitting their buildings into the natural surroundings. Instead of trying to ‘conquer’ nature, as we do, they welcome the vagaries of climate and the challenge of topography” (Bernard Rudofsky 1964, 4).
