CLIMATE ADAPTATION STRATEGIES
- Stilt houses have good natural ventilation strategies for passive cooling. Primarily, the house is cooled by the air that passes underneath it and is drawn up into the space
- floor - made of widely spaced bamboo slats
- large gap between wall and roof cladding - promotes cross-ventilation / allows warm air to flow out, and forces air to pass through the space from one wall to the other
STRUCTURE
- wooden structure consisting of posts to support the house above the ground, depending on the maximum water height at that location
- Monsoon season - the height protects the houses from flood damage
- Dry season - protects the residents in the home from animals on the ground

VERNACULAR
ARCHITECTURE
- having temperature highs of up to 40C with 80% relative humidity and little breeze to speak of
- yearly cycle: dry vs. monsoon

VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE
- “Vernacular architecture had an admirable talent for fitting their buildings into the natural surroundings. Instead of trying to ‘conquer’ nature, as we do, they welcome the vagaries of climate and the challenge of topography” (Bernard Rudofsky 1964, 4).
