Reading

- Fluency: sounds, letters, sight words (based on group)

-Small group reading of Scholastic Leveled Library book

- Preteach or review word study feature of the week

* This group doesn’t take the place of the child’s small group rather is in addition*

  • PLEASE DON'T have parents do the follow:
  • grading
  • giving student information
  • administering benchmarks
  • being alone with students unless they have a fingerprint clearance card
  • making copies

Writing

- Help with Student treasures project

-If parent is comfortable they could do small group workshop lesson

-Help with research for science or social studies

Math

-Play Math (per Marthana’s training)

-Number recognition

-Hands on math games with group

-Math facts

-Cyclical review

*Shouldn’t be a new concept lesson*

Science/Social Studies

- Scientist of the week

- Geographer of the week

- Help with science experiments

- Science/Social studies content vocabulary work

3-5 Suggestions

Art

- Art Masterpiece (specific volunteers)

- Art Friday- Nothing book projects

- Please have materials ready and directions clearly stated

Misc.

- Laminating/cutting

- Putting together centers you’ve created

- LIBRARY CHECKOUT HELP

 Classroom Coordinator

-Coordinate classroom volunteers via “Sign Up Genius”.

- (Four times per school year) Organize conferences times via “Sign-Up Genius”.

-(As needed) Organize classroom parties during the school year.

- Library Assistant

- Assist students with returning books to San Tan’s library and checking out new books

 Play Math Parent(s)

- Attend one training with Marthana Hall

- Facilitate teacher directed Play Math activities 1-2 times per week

- Provide feedback on student progress

Classroom Helper

-Two – Three times per week (days and times help is needed will be determined by the teacher)

- Assist students working in small groups while teacher meets with students during center rotations

 Art Masterpiece

-Meet with the Art Masterpiece coordinator to learn about the program

-Plan 1 art lesson each month (with teacher assistance)

-Prepare materials and present one lesson to the class each month (with teacher assistance)

 At Home Helper As needed

• Misc. projects (cutting, gluing, sorting, etc.)

SEDL found that students with involved parents, no matter their income or background, are more likely to:

  • Earn higher grades and test scores, and enroll in higher-level programs
  • Be promoted, pass their classes and earn credits
  • Attend school regularly
  • Have better social skills, show improved behavior and adapt well to school
  • Graduate and go on to post-secondary education
