Circular Motion Lab

Esther and Mariana

Variables

Purpose

Procedure

Independent: Radius of string, mass (stopper)

Dependent: Velocity, time

The lab that we have conducted is to verify the relationship that exists between the centripetal acceleration and the velocity of the object undergoing this force.

Materials:

  • rubber stopper with string
  • hanger for mass
  • 100g mass
  • stopwatch
  • tape
  • meter stick

Hypothesis

If the tension in the string is constant then the velocity will increase in relation to the radius because of the following equation:

1. Attach the mass and rubber stopper to the hanger

2. Measure a 70cm radius below the stopper and mark it with a piece of tape

3. Swing above you head until it reaches a consistent speed

4. Start the stopwatch and count 10 revolutions

5. Repeat this three times and record

6. Average your three trials and record

7. Repeat steps 2-6 with a 10 cm shorter radius until you hit 10cm

8. Graph results

Graph

Since the radius of the string decreased, the velocity of the stopper was faster making the time shorter.

Data Table:

Conclusion

Error:

The tape on the string sometimes would slip up or down creating a slightly smaller or larger radius.

The time we recorded on the stopwatch on a phone could have been delayed to the person saying go and the reaction of the person counting to revolutions.

There could have also been a small amount of friction because as we rotated the tape on the string, it sometimes would get caught in the plastic tube where it spun from.

We are not certain our mass was kept at rest as it could have swung a bit which would have effected the tension.

Our hypothesis was correct as we made the radius shorter the speed of the stopper became faster.

The graph had a slope of y=.0303x+ 2.33

This means that with the slope decreases by .0303 and as the radius shrinks the velocity increases.

If we were allowed to repeat this experiment, we would take more steps to make sure everything was more controlled in order to ensure the rubber stopper is in proper circular motion and the radius is accurate.
