Henry Grady

Background Information:

Henry Woodfin Grady was born on May 24, 1850 in Athens Georgia.

His father, William S. Grady was a successful merchant who served as a major in the Army.

His father was killed by a Union soldier, and so Henry was raised by his mother Anne Grady.

Education

He went to college at the University of Georgia, where he received a Bachelors Degree

He then went to the University of Virginia to study law, but then he became interested in older languages and history.

This led to his career in journalism.

Working for the Newspaper

Henry Grady held a series of positions among different newspapers, including the "Rome Herald," and the "New York Herald."

He moved to the south and bought a portion of the paper he was working for, which helped make him the most celebrated journalist in the south.

Henry Grady became a well known wirter and he made his newspaper very popular.

He believed that the South could be unified and could could exist with freedom.

He wrote about the "old south" which was tumultuous, driven by hatred, and miserable slavery, and the "new south," which he believed would have a better lifestyle for its citizens.

His Legacy

Henry Grady was honored with naming a high school after him, Henry Grady High School, as well as a Hospital in Atlanta named Henry Grady Memorial hospital.

He was very important because he inspired southerners physically and mentally

He brought light to issues in the South that the citizens wouldn't have known about otherwise.

As an orator, Henry Grady playfully took the job of explaining to Southerners and Northerners that the South was having trouble.

He always found a way to make points while he was being humerus.
