Yellow journalism was during the 1890's and it was first publicaly used by William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. This was a type of journalism that exaggerated events to make them sound much more dramatic. It was used in the U.S. and it made Spain look very bad. They created this type of journalism from the U.S. so that the Cubans would join the U.S. to fight against Spain for all the unfair actions towards Cuba. The Reconcentrados in this case were the Cubans and they have revolted many times from Spain, but none were successfull. This picture is significant to Yellow Journalism and the Reconcentrados because it is exaggerating the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine. This is a primary source because it is the actual article of Yellow Journalism.
Cubans decided that enough was enough when Spain kept taking unfair actions towards Cuba. This happened during the late 1800's, especially 1895. They revolted in Cuba and they have caused much terrible damage to their own country, so that Spain cannot gain profit from the Cubans. Spain mistreated the Cubans by placing them in relocation camps during the rebellion, high taxes, and there was no freedom given towards the Cubans. In result of the unfair conditions, Cubans destroyed their main financial source; The sugar plantations. This picture correlates with the Cuban Revolt because it shows the Cubans burning their own land so that Spain can't use them. This visual is a secondary source because is is a cartoon symbolizing the burning of Cuba.
February 15, 1898 is when the U.S.S. Maine sunk. The U.S.S. Maine was a war ship and the destruction was because of a submerged mine. It killed 268 people of Havana Harbor. This was believed to be caused by Spain, but later evidence proves that it was a spontaneous explosion, or that Hearst may have planned this to start a war between the U.S. and Cuba, against Spain. This visual is a primary source because it is an actual photograph of the U.S.S. Maine. This is significant to the U.S.S. Maine because it is a photograph of the U.S. war ship before it was sunken by a submerged mine.
The United States decided to finally take a stand against he harsh, unfair Spaniards. On April 25, 1898, the U.S. officially declared war against Spain. The U. S. declared war agaisnt Spain mainly because Congress believed that the U.S.S. Maine, our warship at the time, sunk because Spain bombed it. This was devastating to President Mckinley because this brought the national press to start a war and the congress desired action. Also, he wasn't sure whether or not the military was ready for a war. This visual is a primary source because it is the New York Journal and it is the actualy newspaper that was used to spread the knowledge of the start of the war.
The United States' Asiatic Squadron was placed in Manilla Bay, which is located in the Philippines. On May 1, 1898, the Spanish fleet was destroyed by the U.S. Asiatic Squadron. This was the first official battle of the Spanish American War. George Dewey, the U.S. Commander, commanded the U.S. Asiatic Squadron to capture and defeat the Spanish Pacific fleet. Spain controlled this land but this advantage was not of much use, for the U.S. was just too overpowering against the Spanish fleet. This picture demonstrates the battle at Manilla Bay. This is a secondary source becaue it is a cartoon of the battle of Manilla Bay, and it was not drawn at first sight.
