-"to most people hans Hubermann [is] barely visible. An unspecial person.... I'm sure you've met people like this, he was able to appear as merly part of the background"(Suzak 34)

Most important characteristics of Hans Hubermann.

Being able to just blend into the background is not easy.

Hiding a Jew is not easy during this time

What is an obstacle? What problems does it bring?

Affectionate and devoted

Hans forces the hard reality of protecting and hiding Max who is Jewish, during the hunt of the Jews in Germany, during WWII. It also presents the possibility of getting discovered and being punished but far worst losing Liesel.

How does he utilize the characteristics?

How does he utilize the characteristics?

Hans is a caring and loyal person. Max's father saved Hans once, and when it was time for max to need help Hans was there. When he talks to Liesel in a way that we've never seen before get get the idea that he wants her to take this in a serious manner, he talks to her in a violent manner because he hates her but because he loves her and doesn't want to lose her.

Firm, but loving

-"The girl began to sob uncontrollably that papa was dying to pull her into him and hug her tight. He didn't"(Suzak 204).

Actions

  • Max is hidden in the Hubermann's basement,
  • Hans is afraid Liesel will not keep the secret.
  • He talks to her in a way that we've really never seen in the book before.

What lessons does your character learn? What do you learn about your own life?

Hans might learn that when a person comes into your life the way Liesel did, can have a negative impact. But also it can bring many wonders into someone's life. Reading about Max and the conditions he is living in, even though he was being helped, are conditions that a human should never live in. It has made me realize that we take small thing for granted and don't pay much attention to these things.
