With his resilience, strength, and spirit, Max captured my heart. His story showed me how important friendship and love can be for a person's life, and how it changed his life forever.
With the loss of his father at a young age, he didn't have a male figure to raise him. But I do believe that the stories of his father, especially coming from Hans Hubermann, drove him to be as strong as his father.
When he was brought to the concentration camps, he was resilient enough to survive once he was inside. I think his survival is because of his relationship with Liesel. She gave him strength, and I believe that his hope to see her once more kept him alive. He is such a kind hearted and thoughtful person that he was able to develop a relationship with someone so much younger than him.
In the beginning of the story, the reader is thrown straight into Max's situation. We do not know fully what is occuring to him at first, until we see that he is in hiding because of his religon.
Max is a dreamer, with thoughts of fighting the Fuhrer, but at the same time, he is aware of all of the problems revolving around his dreams. If he beat Hitler, people would still hate Jewish people, and still find reason to fault them. He is a haunted man, and yet, when the world hates his people, he still doesn't hate himself. He is strong enough to keep his spirit alive when everyone tried to crush it.
Max is a generally amiable person, with a big heart. However, he can't rationalize what is going on to the Jewish people during this war. He is selfless in some way, where instead of letting Liesel's family get caught, he leaves, only to be brought to a concentration camp anyway.
My favorite character in this story is Max, whose journey throughtout this book, although unspecified, is on that builds character for him. As a Jew in Nazi Germany, it is his job to hide. If he is ever seen, he would be taken away. He is forced into an unfavorable situation, and the way he handles it with grace is what drew me to him.
