Maths or Numeracy?!

How does this affect our pupils?

Examples of Numeracy Across the Curriculum

Attitudes

Children are taught numeracy well at school across all curriculum areas.

Children who need extra help are able to obtain it from other members of staff including form tutors. As teachers we are all teachers of numeracy.

If adults have any issues with areas of numeracy they are able to approach any member of the Mathematics department as part of the Numeracy Action Group.

Adult Literacy & Numeracy

Children's attitudes to Maths becomes a positive one.

They are more willing to discuss misconceptions with peers and teachers as 'I can't do Maths' is not seen as a thing to be proud of.

It is not a badge of honour.

If we change our attitude from 'I can't do Maths' to 'I can do Maths', pupils start to see that it is not OK to be bad at Maths.

They will begin to recognise the importance of numeracy skills.

In form time

"I am (…) surrounded by people who declare with an odd sort of pride that they are mathematically illiterate."

In the shops

In the UK it's common to hear someone say 'I can't do Maths'. Parents freely admit they 'can't do Maths' to their children, friends to their peers, it's even in the films and TV shows that we watch.

Do you ever hear someone say 'I can't read' with the same pride ?

Unfortunately for millions of adults and children in the UK today, ‘I can’t do maths’ has become a self-fulfilling prophesy.

In the news

In every lesson?

This has a huge impact on children as if they hear their parents, teachers, friends, TV programmes, films etc claiming they 'can't do Maths' they begin to believe that Maths isn't important.
