Research Questions/ Hypotheses

Now that we are learning about theory, what do we do with it?

Dictionary Definition of "Research"

: careful study that is done to find and report new knowledge about something

: the activity of getting information about a subject

: studious inquiry or examination; especially : investigation or experimentation aimed at the discovery and interpretation of facts, revision of accepted theories or laws in the light of new facts, or practical application of such new or revised theories or laws

This method is asking us to use theory to ask questions

Hypothesizing

This definition is talking about the scientific method

re: one of our "ways of knowing"

The underlying assumption of the scientific method is that we use theory to guide and form our research interests

  • a hypothesis is a verbal or symbolic statement of relationship between two or more variables (e.g., Trust is positively related to high romantic satisfaction).
  • a variable is any construct or concept that can be observed to take on different values (e.g., Trust, anxiety, self-disclosure, assertiveness, strategy, use, etc). It takes the form of X= fY (i.e: "The value of "X" is a "function" of "Y").
  • a definition (e.g., Se;f-Esteen is the degree to which self is perceived positively), in contrast, characterizes the nature of a variable, but not its relationship to other variables. It takes the form of X=Y.

H1: Men are less likely to take offense to everyday terms like "mankind," freshman," "you guys," and "all man kind."

H2: When watching mature television, children will adopt the language and mannerisms the main characters use.

H3: Because of the increase of social networking options, couples who start their relationship online are more likely to be honest with each other.

H4: Being on Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat allow for users to control and change their message to different audiences.

Hypotheses themselves explain nothing - they simply describe a relationship between two or more things - not why the relationship exists.

Theories are basically sets of interrelated hypotheses that collectively provide an explanation for a phenomenon or process.

The assignment:

In pairs, write a hypothesis and theory justification for the two theories we have learned

Quiz DUE

MIDNIGHT TONIGHT

Write 2 final exam questions.

  • Use the formatting and style from the midterm.
  • Label each question with the theory it is regarding.
  • Must have 4 multiple choice answers OR be T/F

Theories to Use:

There are two keys to this assignment:

  • Developing well-conceived and well-worded hypotheses and
  • Developing reasonable arguments for each hypothesis using theory.
  • This is made credible through casual analysis, strong reasons, evidence, citations, and example.
  • Be creative and current. Don't stick to the tenets of the theory and don't hypothesize things we already know.
