Pottery From the Past
By Melody McAtee
I was walking in Cairo when I turned around and tripped over something sticking out of the sand. I came back with my crew the next day and we started to dig abound the big stone and soon found out that it was a column from some old village from over 100 years ago. While we were looking for the the rest of the house we found a shattered bowl. We are in the process of putting square grids on the site to find the exact spot where we found the object. We will remove a layer at a time to make sure that we get all of the pieces that we can find to put all of the clues together to find out how the people lived in Cairo Egypt in 1768. The bowl is a primary sorce.
We found out that there was an earthquake in Cairo in 1768. We also found some coins which were made in the year 1768. The bowl was made by a pottery wheel and had very detailed paint work on it. We believe that they used the bowl to carry water or milk from a goat because we found some goat bones and we found mold from water and milk in the bowl.
The pottery is from 1768 and we found some coins with the emperor's face in the year 1768 we also found out about how old it was when we found some human and goat bones. We used scientific dating because we found some coins and we knew that the coin was from the year 1768 so we found out how old it was exactly, and we also used radiocarbon dating for the pottery. We are also using relative dating because we can use the information that they used a pottery wheel to make its formation. This artifact is non written artifact, it is also a fossil.
We are in Cairo, Egypt in the desert.
The Egyptians in Egypt used this pottery bowl to hold water because they need to drink from it to live. They often used it for fancy occasions, because of the detail work painted on the bowl. The Details on the bowl are of people dancing. They are having a good time, so they use this piece of art to make them look fancy. It has very nice details on it. It may have been used to hold some coins that we found next to the bowl too because there was a coin inside the shattered bowl, but because of the mold inside the pottery it was also used for liquids.
