Discussing Procedures & Outcomes
- Teacher brings students back together for open discussion about the activity.
- Class works together to offer advice and correct issues
- Teacher credits students who worked well together.
Practicing the Strategy
- Divide class into pairs
- !! do not pair 2 weak readers !!
- Give reading assignments
- !! give specific stopping instructions
- Summarizer is instructed to close the book and summarize the paragraph as accurately as possible.
- Listener instructed to follow along in the book.
- Listener corrects misstatements & offers omitted important facts.
- Teacher should moved around the room in observation.
Conclusion
Cooperative Scripting is effective in supporting students as they read informational text.
Because they are obtaining information to summarize, they must read carefully.
The recalling of text, active listening, and correcting done by the partner causes them focus.
Due to roles switching, students stay on task without getting bored.
Modeling the Procedure
Explain the purpose of the strategy
- Teacher chooses a partner and models silent reading while asking the class to read the same paragraph.
- Teacher briefly summarizes the paragraph out loud, asking her partner to listen for misstatements/omissions.
- Teacher deliberately make mistakes to show the importance of active listening.
- Teacher reverses roles with her partner for next paragraph.
- used to help students recall and summarize reading material
- stress importance of both partners being actively involved and supportive while summarizing the important ideas in each paragraph.
Working in Pairs to Improve Comprehension and Recall
- Cooperative Scripts is a term for the practice of two students working together to summarize material and support one another's understanding and recall of the important facts and concepts contained in the material read.
Quick Overview
Note to Teachers:
- Students get into pairs of 2
- One will be the summarizer and one will be the listener
- Each person reads the same paragraph silently
- Summarizer discusses main points without looking at book.
- Listener follows along in book making corrections and offering omitted information.
- both partners benefit from this activity.
- however, larger gains were found for the summarizers rather than the listeners.
- It is important to pay attention to paragraph length.
- be clear in stopping point instructions
