Background information
- The term fast food was previously referred to as QSR (quick service restaurant). It was only in the year 1951 that the term fast food came into existence when it was first included into the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
- 2006: According to an estimate, Americans spend nearly $142 billion on fast food.
- Some historians and secondary school textbooks believe that A&W was the first fast food restaurant . Thus, the American company White Castle is generally credited with opening the second fast-food outlet in Wichita, Kansas in 1921, selling hamburgers for five cents apiece from its inception and spawning numerous competitors and emulators.
I believe fast food restaurants are popular among teenagers because it is easy to purchase and not too expensive for the average person.
To further research this question I chose to survey teenagers within my school to see their opinions. They would be the most logical group to survey because they could provide personal examples on why they enjoy fast food restaurants.

Results
- 85% of the teenagers I interviewed are very active during the school week
- 100% participate in after school activities throughout the school year
- 50% have a job
- 95% find fast food appealing
- 95% don't think it is possible to cut fast food out of their life completely
- The most popular alternative to eating fast food was preparing a home cooked meal
- The most common reason why fast food restaurants are so popular is because it is quick and cheap.
Conclusion
Through my research I can conclude that many teenagers are busy through out the week either doing extra curricular actives or working therefore fast food is a quick solution for their dinner. Fast food is also extremely cheap and easily accessible allowing many people to afford the food. Fast food is also very appealing to teenagers because the fattening ingredients keep them coming back for more.
