Jerry is supposed to be the underdog against the cat because that is the natural order of prey, but in almost all of the short cartoons, Jerry outwits Tom the cat and presents him as being a fool that is dominated by the mouse. Even in some cartoons Jerry is able to get the bulldog to protect him from Tom, which shows his control over others bigger and higher than him.
The absurdity of the situation in which the cartoon characters find themselves and the depth of the trouble that unfolds is what makes slapstick funny. It is never a simply solved problem. Rather, the character will try to ‘outsmart’ the antagonist or protagonist and get themselves into a bigger mess. This can be seen in some of Tom & Jerry's shorts as Tom (The antagonist) tries to outsmart Jerry (The protagonist)
In older episodes of Tom & Jerry the figure of Mammy two shoes is "a heavy-set, middle-aged, black woman who often has to deal with the mayhem generated by the lead characters." She is often ridiculed by Tom and Jerry through acts of violence that create a light humorous scene.
