A Timeline of Nursing

1911 AD - The Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada was renamed to the American Nurses Association (American Nurses Association, 2020).

1917 AD – More than 30,000 nurses served in World War I after the United States joined on April 6th, 1917 (Stegen et al., 2019).

1920-1930 AD – During these years, we saw the expansion of hospitals and more complex care being rendered to patients (Stegen et al., 2019).

1923 AD – All 48 states enacted nursing licensure laws (Stegen et al., 2019).

1935 AD – New York was the first state to make mandatory the licensure act (NCSBN, 2020-a).

1939-1945 AD – World War II saw over 60,000 American nurses serve from the European to the pacific theater (Stegen et al., 2019).

1950 AD – This was the first year that the same examination was used in all jurisdictions in the United States and its territories (NCSBN, 2020-a).

1959-1975 AD – Over 5,000 nurses served in war during this period (Stegen et al., 2019).

1901 AD – The United States Nurse Corps was established (Stegen et al., 2019).

1903 AD – The title, Registered Nurse (R.N.), derived from the Nurse Registration Act (1903). This act provided a permissive licensure to those who met certain standards (Stegen et al., 2019).

1908 – The United States Navy Nurses Corps was established (Stegen et al., 2019).

1910 – Florence Nightingale died on August 13th and the age of 90 (Stegen et al., 2019).

1861-1865 AD – The American Civil War established the need for nurses in military service and the creation of the American Army Nurses Corps would later be founded as a result of this (Stegen et al., 2019).

1878 AD – The first nursing textbook was created by a committee of physicians and nurses called, "Handbook for family and general use" (Stegen et al., 2019).

1893 AD - The American Society of Superintendent of Training Schools for Nurses was founded and later it would become the National League of Nursing (National League for Nursing, 2020).

1896 AD – The Nurses Associated Alumnae of the United States and Canada was founded. This later became the American Nurses Association (Stegen et al., 2019).

1899 AD – International Council of Nurses was formed (ICN, 2020).

1815 AD – Irish sisters of charity, a Roman Catholic group of nurses, was formed by Mary Aikenhead (Stegen et al., 2019).

1820AD – Florence Nightingale was born (Stegen et al., 2019).

1839AD – The Nursing Society of Philadelphia was formed (University of Pennsylvania, 2020) .

1853 AD – The Crimean War shed a new light on the importance of sanitation and having proper facilities for the care and recovery of patients (Stegen et al., 2019).

1859 AD – Florence Nightingale published, "Notes on Nursing." This book was intended to give hints on nursing to those entrusted with its practice (Stegen et al., 2019).

1860-1890 AD – many new nursing schools dedicated to the Nightingale model were founded (Stegen et al., 2019).

1982 AD – The nursing examination process changed and became the NCLEX-RN (NCSBN, 2020-b).

1992 AD – The first RN was elected into congress. Eddie Bernice Johnson was elected into the House of Representatives in 1992 (Stegen et al., 2019).

1994AD – Computer-Adapted testing was initiated nationwide (NCSBN, 2020-b).

1998 AD – Mutual Recognition Nurse Licensure Compact was finalized (NCSBN, 2020-b).

1732 AD - Philadelphia opens an almshouse, which would later become Philadelphia General Hospital (University of Pennsylvania, 2020).

1736 AD - Jean Louis funds the creation of the Hospital of St. John, later known as Charity Hospital, for the poor people of New Orleans (University of Pennsylvania, 2020).

1751 AD - Benjamin Franklin, who was a strong advocate of high-quality nursing, help found the Pennsylvania Hospital (University of Pennsylvania, 2020).

1775 AD - George Washington granted authorization to establish hospitals for sick troops to be staffed at the ratio of one nurse to ten patients (University of Pennsylvania, 2020).

1798 AD - The first system of instruction for nurses in North America was initiated by Dr. Valentine Seaman at the New York Hospital (Stegen et al., 2019).

1600 AD - The second medical school on the American continent was founded at the University of Lima (Stegen et al., 2019).

1633 AD - The Sister of Charity in France was founded in Paris. The sister recruited and educated intelligent young women to care for abandoned children as well as provided hospital care (Stegen et al., 2019).

1639 AD - The Ursuline Sisters accompanied Augustinian nuns from France to Quebec, Canada to staff the Hotel-Dieu-De Quebec. They organized the first training of nurses on the North American Continent, Teaching the native women how to care for their families during a smallpox epidemic (Stegen et al., 2019).

390 CE - The first general hospital was established in Rome by Saint Fabiola (Mitchell & Grippando, 1993).

1096-1291 AD - The Crusades witnessed the founding of military nursing orders, such as the Knights Hospitallers of St.John, the Knights Templars, and the Knights of the Teutonic Order (Stegen et al., 2019).

1500 AD - The 1500s saw the beginning of the dark period of nursing. New hospitals had been built but quickly became places of horror as unsanitary conditions caused them to be a source of epidemics and disease (Sundstrom & Sundstrom, 1998).

1517 AD - The reformation brought changes in the role of women, limiting them to the confines of the home. Duties included bearing children and caring for the home. Hospital care was relegated to the uncommon women, a group consisting of prisoners, prostitutes, and drunks who had no status (Stegen et al., 2019).

1524 AD - The first hospital on the American continent was created and it was called the Hospital of Immaculate Conception (Stegen et al., 2019).

1578 AD - The first medical school on the American continent was founded at the University of Mexico (Stegen et al., 2019).
