Judgement/ Evaluation
This painting is a success in my opinion. Although others may argue that is is incomplete, I would argue the opposite. I believe that it has enough objects and it is complete. In comparison to other paintings such as "The apparition of a Face on a Beach"by Salvador Dali himself, I feel that this painting is better. This painting is much broader and doesn't have as much variety as the other painting. In the apparition of a face on a beach, the actual painting has so many objects and elements throughout every inch of the painting make it hard to find the point of emphasis and with this painting, it is much easier to find. In terms of originality, this painting wins. The melting clocks is something not seen frequently making it extremely original. The face in the ground was also a very unique component especially since it wasn't a complete face, and it looked as if it was melting away as well.
Description
Interpretation
The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dali was created in 1931 under the category of surrealism and illusionism. The important elements of the work include the color scheme, the balance, lines, and shading. The artist used colors that went well with each other and those include many hues and shades of brown. The painting has more warm colors on the top, and darker colors on the bottom, once again, because of the lighting. The contrasting colors would be the light but pigmented shades of blue in the clock , and the yellowish in the rocks in the background. The use of space helped determine the point of emphasis within the painting. The emptiness on the left side gave more focus on the right side which is where the clocks and face are. In terms of subject matter, the main objects are the melting clocks, the pale half face, the ants and the rocks in the background.
The expressive qualities I find within the painting are somewhat melancholic. The overall interpretation that I would give to the painting would relate to the use of time and how its draining away. This ties into the concept of life and it gives us a brief description that we are wasting it by letting time slip away. What seems to bring this “sad” vibe to it, is the shading and emptiness throughout the painting. The scenery is lonely and the cool colors of the blue add to the effect. This work relates to the ideas and events of the world because it shows how scenery and areas can make different tones and emotions in a painting. The whole concept of time as well. The actual persistence of memory and time are all different within every individual and this painting just manifests an idea of one person and this can be interpreted as individuality or can be used to make other people relate.
Balance: Left side Heavier than the Right
Emphasis: clocks
Movement: None
Pattern: The clocks are repeated.
Repetition: Not really. Work is not active
Proportion: Objects seem to have are in proportion with one another
Rhythm: subtle. Variety is needed to make it active soo..is there variety?
Variety: Yes and No
Unity: Yes. All the objects work well together and the work gives sense of completeness
Analysis
The work is constructed by making sharp and shaded lines . The artist uses the light source to make specific shadows to make some areas recede and vice versa. The repetition in this painting would be the clocks because there are multiple ones. Although the points of emphasis lie within the actual clocks and the face, the rocks towards the top left of the painting would also be considered. The artists use of highlighting makes the rocks very visible making it plausible to infer that it is important within the painting.
Color: Colors that work well with each other
Line: Some sharp lines for definition.
Shape: That square thingy in the top left corner
Space: Lots of empty space on the right side
This is a good painting because the artist was able to to create a work of art that has strong unity and in my opinion, unity is one of the factors that matters the most. The color scheme makes all the objects within the painting work well with each other and combine with one another. The shading was very effective by making some areas more defined and it helped to add the desired effect on some objects(make some things sharp or soft). The concept of the painting itself is very unique. What is the persistence of memory? What does it mean? The whole idea of having melting clocks on what seems to be a beach, with a a melting pale/incomplete face, some ants invading a clock, and a random tree branch that isn't even growing on the ground is all different! In my opinion, different is good, and the simple fact that the artist put all these objects in one painting and was able to execute it effectively, is a reason to why I believe this is a really good painting.
