Should Schools Check Student's backpacks or lockers?

Personal Belongings

Backpacks or other belongings on a student's body may be searched if:

  • Staff member has reason to think the student is breaking a school rule (a hunch).

  • A lead: someone has told a staff member that a student is in possession of a dangerous item.

Yes, schools should check student's backpacks and lockers.

The safety of our nation's people should take priority.

Are these searches violating privacy rights?

There is no "expectation of privacy" when it comes to school property your child uses.

The lack of security in schools is a threat to the safety of students and staff.
