The mission started with the Arden defense. The Germans were to use a last ditch effort through the Arden Forest to overtake the Allies. Germany is well know for surrounding its enemies and overtaking them. Americans did believe capturing German soldiers about the oncoming attack. General Patton, General Eisenhower, General Truman are some key people in the war. December 16, 1944, Germany hits Allied forces hard on all sides. The weather helps hide the German troops. Early on due to Germany surrounding the Allies the largest mass surrender takes place. Allied units in hiding are reinforced and a counter-offensive against Germany begins. Thsi was a major reason for the downfall of the Third Reich.

This was also called operation Market Garden. This began September 17, 1944. The mission was to drop 4,000 paratroopers 60 miles into Holland. Germany had 400,000 troops in the area. If the mission is successful it could end the war in weeks. Germans had anti-aircraft equipment, Luftwaffe, panzer's, against a small allied force. Allies had air force, paratroopers , and gliders. The germans were surprised by the attack, they had to send reinforcements, and guard all bridges. Then either an American or British soldier brought a complete battle plan with them onto the field, which compromised the plan. On September 18, 1944,a second trip was made for paratroopers. Although, this time the Germans were ready. The mission ended up being unsuccessful for the Allies.
