The Landfill Experience

The Methane Gas

"Playing Dangerous"

The middle

"Filling up"

We used Popsicle sticks to imitate wooden beams and a straw to imitate the exit of dangerous chemicals such as methane gas. We taped the popsicle sticks together and slid the straw between the Popsicle sticks so it would be balanced. We then taped the Popsicle sticks to our bowl. Making our methane gas have a place to exit.

Our landfill needed to sustain the garbage and keep it in place and hold the toxins and water. We made the clay bowl as long as possible and the walls around it tall enough so that our garbage would stay there, almost like a trash can. If the middle did not hold and everything would spill out then it would be the tragic and it would cause harm to "Our Environment" Our clay had to be like the half of a circle.

The Bottom

Normal landfills in the real world most likely have a clay dome like designs at the botttom and ours was no exception. Our bottom was made out of clay and we waited for it to harden so that it would become hard and impermeable, that way we knew no substance would sip through. Then we added plastic at the bottom for extra protection so that toxins and water would not soften the clay

The Cap

"Skeptics"

The final Step to our landfill was to add the a Cap. The cap was very important because things had to be contained and if it overflowed it would mean that we failed at making our landfill. The cap had to act like a tent, it would have to keep water out and keep the things inside of it dry. We fabricated our own tent with tape and plastic. We then poked a hole in the plastic and put our straw through it so the methane would have a place to exit. After putting the cap over our landfill we covered it with more soil. Just like a real landfill we added plastic and soil to keep our landfill dry in the inside.

The Process

"Visionaries"

We needed to make our landfill out of basic house utensils, but our biggest concern was getting the right pieces without having to go over the budget limit and for our landfill to actually work.

The Basic Functions and Designs

The first steps to building our landfill was assigning jobs and deciding what kind of design we needed. We needed to obtain our basic object without going over the budget limit of 1000$

We designed our landfill off the following image.

Our our top priority was to stop the bottom from breaking so nothing could be contaminated. But also to cap off the top so it would not over flow.

The cap was a layer of tape, plastic and dirt.
