It was my first faculty meeting, and several teachers were talking
Talking while the principal spoke – gossiping and squawking
And then the issue of students arose, and those teachers ceased their balking
They said “Amen” to the issue of punishing students for too much talking
“Send them to the principal, remove them from my class
They’re interfering with the learning of others who want to pass
How dare they be so rude and do the things they do!
They’re embarrassing themselves, yet they do not have a clue
They speak when I am speaking, they don’t do all their work
They obviously have no manners – responsibility they shirk!
Well, as a brand-new teacher, I did not say a word
I just sat back and witnessed it all – the irony was absurd
How can you expect your students to do things that you won’t do?
If you want your students to be respectful, shouldn’t it begin with you?
As part of a professional image, educators should be good role models to students.
Language and actions should reflect adult behavior and be honorable and fair.
Because they are in the public eye, educators should always be aware of their actions and behave ethically.

Even though educator’s are often frustrated, overworked and under-paid, they must remember that they chose their profession because they love their students and their content area.
A school is no place for complaints and negativity.
Although requirements vary from state to state, all states have professional standards for K-12 teachers.
Most require a bachelor’s degree with a teaching major and basic testing for certification.
Most states require that educators work toward a master’s degree within a specific time period.
Educators must also attend mandatory professional training sessions.
A professional educator will always get to know his or her students.
He or she will listen to students’ problems, questions, and concerns and treat every student with respect.

He/she must continually be aware of best practices in the field, including new teaching methods and materials.
This involves post-graduate work, workshops, professional development, and joining professional organizations.
Knowledge is power.
Power is the ability to do things.
The more knowledge a person has, the more the person is able to accomplish.
Knowledge is obtained by reading professional literature and attending conferences.
Knowledge gives a person options. – As more knowledge is added, more learning takes place, more options are generated, and more power to accomplish is unleashed.
A professional educator is never satisfied with an average performance.
He/she must research and plan each lesson fully to give the students the best lesson possible.
