The Kuku Yalanji people use to wear short rags around the bodies. But as time passed and the Earth became more moderized, so did the Kuku Yalanjian people. Now, most of them have started to wear more modern clothings. But they still haven't gotten used to wearing shoes.
So modern clothes - shoes.
In their culture, the mothers sisters are considered to be your mothers to.
The tribe takes from the forest only those things that are absolutely nessisary. They believe that taking from the forest means less for tomorrow. Believe that the spirits of their dead ancestors find refuge in the forest and remain there, watching the tribe and ensuring that they all obey their rules and laws.
Instead of burning the house of recently deceased people, a fire is set outside the hut and a smoking branch is carried through the house to remove the dead persons scent and cleanse the area.
They live in the tropical rainforest from Mossman, north to Cooktown and inland to Palmer Island and Mt. Carbine. (North East Queensland, Australia.)
The Kuku-Yalanji Tribe
Most of them live at either Wujal Wujal on the Bloomfield River or at the Gorge on the Mossman River. They also live in the Daintree, which is a rainforest that is 90,000 million years old. (**Please remember that this is all in Australia.**) The Kuku Yalanji is the only tribal rainforest people in Australia who still have their own culture & their own language.
The Kuku Yalanji tribe was first seen in 1877 by Europeans mining gold. The tribe has been around approximately 135 years. But their dream stories have been around for 50,000 years.
(Interesting fact: The Kuku Yalanji people were treated just like the Aboriginals. They were also alike in many ways. ) With that being said, what do you think they eat?
Food:
Artwork is done using Wuba (ochre) for paint.Wuba is a coloured rock formed by an accumulation of iron oxides in the soil. Black is a rare color for the tribe.
Like most Aboriginals, they have a god or many gods. Aboriginal people are very religious and spiritual, but rather than praying to a single god they cannot see, each group generally believes in a number of different deities, whose image is often depicted in some tangible, recognisable form. (Meaning that the group prays to many gods in different forms.) This form may be that of a particular landscape feature, an image in a rock art shelter, or in a plant or animal form. (**Basically, they personified a figure and they worshiped it.**)
The rite of passage for a Kuku Yalanji boys is kinda easy. The mother goes to the shore, while the father takes the son far away into the water. The son is let out of the boat by himself. The child must swim to its mother. And if they reach their mother, than their manhood has begun.
Created their own sign language. Also created a mother in law sign language, used when discussing the "dreamtime" or tribal lore. The tribe only uses 13 constants. (B,D, J, K, L, M, N, NY, R, RR, W, and Y)
They actually have a dictionary on this.
They had an encounter with the Europeans, which ended badly. From 1897 to the 1960's, they faced the government's law that allowed them to be placed under "protection" in attempt to reserve their culture. During World War II, they began concentrating around the Mossman George RiverReserve. They were soon moved several times by the Aboriginal Government. (**In the 1890's, the tribe was decimated.**)
