HEADING TO THE ED

Before heading to the ED:

PATIENT INTERVIEW FORMS

  • Put on a white lab coat and clip your badge to it
  • Grab a clipboard with a patient interview form, a pen, and the trial info
  • Ask Stroke Team member for their badge for access to the ED

Making Phone Calls

ENROLLING PATIENTS IN TRIALS

  • Information to record:

WHAT TO DO ON SHIFT

  • Be prepared

Dr. Starkman may ask follow ups regarding the patient's eligibility for certain trials; be aware of which these may be beforehand

  • Watch and assist

If the patient is eligible for a trial, Dr. Starkman or Judy will come to Ronald Reagan to enroll him/her; your job is to help out when you are asked

Patient Interview Form

Only make phone call if stroke is ischemic

  • General info: age, ethnicity, handedness, independence
  • Last-known well-time & time of onset
  • NIH Stroke Scale/Score
  • Past conditions & medical history
  • Current state: BP, glucose level, medications

Before calling:

  • Check with Stroke Team member to make sure you have all pertinent information
  • Organize notes into a comprehensive story
  • Tips:

During call:

  • Introduce yourself: "Hello, Dr. Starkman. This is Ikaasa calling from the Student Stroke Force."
  • Make sure your story has a beginning, middle, and end
  • Important to note: LKWT & what patient was doing during onset, how patient arrived at hospital, current state of patient
  • Write all info on the back of the sheet first; organize later
  • Listen to paramedics as they recount to nurses and physicians

**NEVER SAY "I'M NOT SURE"**

Four-hours, bi-weekly

Getting into the ED:

1. Sign in on the first floor lobby of Ronald Reagan

  • Take the elevator to the 1st floor
  • Swipe the Stroke Team member's badge to unlock the doors

2. Head up to shared Stroke Office on 8th floor

3. Inside the office:

  • Introduce yourself to the Stroke Member with whom you are sharing the shift and get their phone number
  • Establish who is rounding when

4. In between rounds:

  • Catch up on homework
  • Review clinical criteria
  • Be mindful and respectful of others in office

DRESS THE PART

STROKE PACKETS

Adhere to the dress code for:

Contain paperwork for physics and nurses to fill out during strokes and critical tools for patient care

Shifts & Neurorounds

General meetings

Presentations & Health Fairs

  • Refer to second drawer of filing cabinet in Stroke Office for refills
  • Refer to first drawer of filing cabinet for clinical trial packets
  • Use list on the inside of stroke packet as a guide for what materials to insert

ROUNDING

At the front desk:

  • Check to see if any of the five stroke packets are opened or missing
  • Pick up any used packets to bring upstairs, refill, and bring back down during next round

Around the ED:

SSF ER PROTOCOL & PROCEDURE

  • Walk around to check for potential missed stroke
  • If something seems funny, confirm with a nurse
