Call To Adventure

Ellen has to stay at Annemarie's house because her parents went to a relative's house. Also since the Nazis were around and checking for more Jews,Ellen had to pretend to be apart of the Johansen Family. "Tonight Ellen be coming to stay overnight and be our guest for a few days!"(Lowry,35) "Annemarie Johansen. And this is my sister...(Ellen says) Lise, Lise Johansen." (Lowry,47)

This is is Annemarie's call of adventure to save her friend Ellen, she knew that Ellen was Jewish and needed help

Refusal Of the Call

Ellen was worried which made Annemarie worried. And Annemarie was asking her mother about Ellen's new year which is a Jewish religion and that this may not be a good time to do anything. "but it was clear that they were worried and it made Annemarie worried". (Lowry, 35) "But mama,it's their New Year. They were going to have a celebration at home!" (Lowry, 34)

Refusal Of The Call in The Number The Stars is basically when Annemarie doesn't feel comfortable with Ellen having to stay with her family for a few days during the jewish new year which Ellen and her family were going celebrate, and that probably made Ellen worried and that made Annemarie worried and that also probably caused Annemarie to ask her mother that probably this isn't right. She felt bad for her friend, and was uncomfortable with her being so worried.

The Ordinary World

Life was good for Annemarie and Ellen, its the time when Annemarie and Ellen found out about the Nazis and what they are capable of. In the ordinary world Ellen and Annemarie would race a lot to practice for school races. "We have to meet for athletic meet on Friday- I know I'm going to win the girls' race this week, but I have been practicing every week." (Lowry, 1)

This stage in the book and in the hero's journey relate to eachother because the ordinary world in the hero's journey is before everything gets serious, before the big fight, before everything got real. The ordinary world in Number The Stars is before Annemarie and Ellen knew about the Nazis and what they are doing to only Jewish people.

The Hero's Journey

Entering The Unknown

Summary

The Hero's Journey was written by Joseph Campell. The Hero's Journey is about what a real hero is and the stages they go through to become that hero that they're meant to be. A hero is just not a cop, fireman, doctor,a mother, father, or a person that saved your life . It can be an ordinary person. It doesn't matter what shape or size you are,its about what you are capable of and how you can do it the sacrifices that the hero has to go through and how the sacrifices make them grow as a person in a strong and awesome way not just by shape or size. Mormomyth is anther word for Hero's Journey.

Number The Stars by Lois Lowry is mostly about a German girl named Annemarie who is 10 years old. It's 1943 in Copenhagen and this time is back where the Nazis were in the picture. Annemarie and her family have to sacrifice their lives for Annemarie's friend Ellen and Ellen's family to save their lives because they're jewish and they could be killed or captured. This is a dangerous mission for Annemarie. There was no turning back now and the job they had to do had to be done right, if there was a mistake it will lead to consequences.

After the Johansen's have been lucky with Lise's baby picture of her having dark hair because of Ellen's dark hair. Ellen apologizes to Mrs. Johansen for her having dark hair after Ellen said that, Mrs. Johansen explains to Ellen how lucky they were and that Ellen has beautiful dark hair.Ellen has been lucky again because Ellen has that jewish star necklace that is called star of David and Annemarie had yanked it off of her neck before the German soldiers began to inspect her and Ellen, if Annemarie didn't noticed the necklace on Ellen the German soldier would've known that Ellen is Jewish.Soon after that, Mr. and Mrs.Johansen think about what they should do and that choice is that Mrs. Johansen ,Ellen and would Annemarie go to Uncle Henrik's house instead of school and plus it would raise less suspicion of their appearance especially for Ellen's sake. "We must take the girls to Henrik's." (Lowry,50)

Mr. and Mrs. Johansen did a good choice when they have decided to take Ellen and Annemarie to Uncle Henrik. Things were a lot safer since then.

Master Of Two Worlds

Meeting The Mentor

In the beginning of the story Annemarie kind of took things for granted, she didn't really know what people went through as much as she did right now. She didn't know about the nazis, she probably thought that the soldiers around the town was to protect or something. She didn't know about the sacrifices. She's more of a better person and understood more things that she probably would've not understood before. "And she had not known that the Germans were going to take away the Jews." (Lowry, 76)

Sometimes you have to change to solve a problem and that's what Annemarie did. She wanted to see her bestfirend again, so she did everything she could to save her life

Road Of Trials

Uncle Henrik is kind of basically Annemarie's mentor because he tells her that she's brave, how she is brave and help her to brave. Uncle Henrik basically defines her and helps her and also most importantly gives her advice."It is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything."(Lowry,76)"We did so, to help you to be brave, because we love you." (Lowry,77)

Uncle Henrik knows what's best for Annemarie and has faith in her for every step she goes on completing her mission. She needs him. She most definitely would not be better off without him.

Annemarie is not having a good reaction when her almost brother-in-law Peter tells her more about the Nazis after her father told her . She's finding out that Mrs. Hirsch the button shop owner is Jewish and that her shop closed because of that and Annemarie just realized that the Rosens are jewish and that they are wanted. She's just having a rough time understanding why the nazis hate the jewish and want them to suffer. " Is Mrs. Hirsch Jewish? Is that why the button shop closed? Why have they done that?" (Lowry,24) "Mrs. Hirsch is such a nice lady."(Lowry,24)

What Annemarie needs to work on is to accept that the fact that Nazis hate jews and want them to suffer but the mission can still be accomplished.

Allies and Helpers

Peter and Uncle Henrik are Annemarie's true allies and helpers. Peter tells Annemarie more about the Nazis and also Peter at the end did such a huge help, it was super important and definitely without him the mission would've been unsuccessful.Same with Uncle Henrik, the Rosens needed a place to hide on the boat so they will be unnoticeable. Uncle Henrik tells what's brave about Annemarie. He gives her advice. Thank goodness for them.

All heros need allies and helpers just like Annemarie she couldn't do her mission without Uncle Henrik and Peter. Image a mission without allies and helpers or a mentor... it doesn't look pretty.

Confronting The father

Magic Flight

Annemarie and her parents went to Annemarie's older sister Lise's grave and laid flowers and Annemarie's parents probably thought that its time to tell her the ugly truth that really happened that caused Lise's death because they told her that night. " That night, Annemarie's parents told her the truth about Lise's death at the beginning of the war. "So it was true, what you said, that she was hit by a car." (Lowry, 131)

Annemarie's parents knew that she had to know the truth about Lise's death since she got older it would've been best to know anyway.

Finally The Nazi war was over after 2 years of it. The Rosens are safe and sound and they will be home soon. Annemarie has finished her mission . " The war has ended. "When the Rosens come home you can give it back to her." (Lowry, 132)

Annemarie finished her mission and she's back home and everything is back to normal but there are other stages after this one it's just that those ones are the things that she probably had on her mind and that she needs to find out.

Supreme Ordeal

The Rosens were unnoticed on Uncle Henrik's boat and could not be found by the nazis and that gave them the advantage to escape. Even the dogs couldn't find them either even though they have a great sense of smell. "But the soldiers were so angry about the escaping jews and-the fact that they can't find them- that they have just started using trained dogs ...It was Peter who took the problem to scientists and doctors...and they created a special drug...It attracts dogs, but when they sniff at it, it ruins their sense of smell..." (Lowry,124)

Annemarie is done with her mission, but not done with the finishing touches.
