The combination of Hitler's smarts, his aggression, and his mental instability made him very dangerous. Had he grown up in a different environment, he may have been more stable and less aggressive, and therefore never become "evil". However, his mentality-shaping childhood does not excuse his actions or make them acceptable.
-even though Hitler was known as a "loner" during the war, he was made out to be a hero when involved politically
-despite distant personal relationships, he was very charismatic in public
-he promised the things that people wanted, such as abolition of the Treaty of Versailles, jobs for the unemployed, and more living space for the "master race"
-he was known for his love for children, animals, and art (which is ironic considering how evil he is now considered to be)
-described as neurotic, narcissistic, and as having various undiagnosed mental issues, including a Messiah Complex and an Oedipal Complex
-had trouble relating to others and was known to be non-sexual despite having a mistress
-was unaware of his personality faults, and blamed other people and society for his failings
-impulsive, egocentric, cold, aggressive, un-empathetic, and tough-minded (indicating that he was highly psychotic)
-extremely smart
-his younger brother died when he too was young, and he was observed to have become more withdrawn and quiet
-he was rejected twice from art school, and after that lived in a homeless shelter
-he fought in WWI (PTSD)
-he went to jail
-his niece, Geli Raubal, shot herself when she was 23
-Hitler lived with her from the time she was 17 until her death and controlled her actions, basically keeping her prisoner
-he went into a deep depression, describing her as the only woman he ever loved
-paranoid schizophrenia is characterized by delusions, preoccupation and obsession with a central idea, and suicidal thoughts, and can be associated with anxiety and aggressiveness.
-Hitler expressed all of these traits, including delusions: after being hospitalized for exposure to mustard gas, he insisted that his god came to him in a vision and told him that Jews were to blame for the defeat of Germany (he also temporarily lost his sight after the exposure, in a bout of "hysterical blindness", which came from a psychiatric disorder)
-observed by Sigmund Freud; a stage of development where a male child feels like he is in competition with his father for his mother's affection; most children outgrow it
-Hitler was known to be very, very close to his mother and to hate his father
-ultimately the Oedipal Complex translated to an obsession with the mother figure Germany and a hatred for Jews
"I didn't love my father, but I was all the more afraid of him. He had tantrums and immediately became physically violent. My poor mother would always be very scared for me.”
-Hitler to his secretary
-the authoritarian parenting style is characterized by obedience without questions, rigidity, and physical violence as a punishment
-having authoritarian parents is closely linked to the development of aggression and antisocial behavior
-coupled with his alcoholism, this parenting style drove Hitler to hate his father and helped fuel his Oedipal Complex
