Athletes and Somatotypes...

Endomorph

How to spot an Endomorph

- Wide hips

- Narrow Shoulders

- Has a tendency to store fat

1. You will have a small pile of pictures/words of athletes and sports, can you place them into columns of the same somatotype.

Example: A Sumo Wrestler is an Endomorph due to their tendency to store fat.

Ectomorph

How to spot an Ectomorph

- Long, thin frame

- Narrow shoulders and hips

- Slim Build

- Generally does not build

muscle easily

- Generally does not store

fat easily

Why?

2. On your work sheets can you provide reasons why certain athletes benefit from their Somatotype?

There are three main extreme body types;

- Mesomorph

- Ectomorph

- Endomorph

Mesomorph

Mesomorph

Ectomorph

People such as ourselves are somewhere in between... HOWEVER - You only need to know these three categories

How to spot a Mesomorph

- Low levels of fat

- Builds muscle easily

- Solid Build

- Wide shoulders

- Narrow hips

The low percentage of fat and muscle allows an athlete to become lighter, this means they have less weight to carry or lift

The low percentage of fat and high percentage of muscle allows for speed, power and strength.

A sprinter needs power from the muscles in their legs therefore they are a Mesomorph

Endomorph

Somatotypes

Exam Questions

We are learning to recognise the three different Somatyotypes, linking to specific athletes/activities.

The high percentage of fat and/or muscles allows for extra power or to gain an advantage in having extra weight. They use their bulk to add momentum to throws or overpower/resist opponents

Somatotypes

How can we remember the Somatotypes?

Mesomorph = M for MUSCLES!

Endomorph = D for DUMPY!

Ectomorph = T for THIN!
