Most households were, and continue to be, multigenerational, with parents, children and grandparents sharing the home and duties. Grandparents in particular are important to child-rearing, and are a major influence in children’s lives. Within one hundred years of the first contact with European explorers (1778) the population of Kanaka Maoli people had decreased by 90%. Despite this, the culture fought colonialism through the formation of the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1795 by the joining of several independent chiefdoms. This lasted until 1894 in which the Republic of Hawaii was established as a territory under U.S. control. This is considered the first instance of American imperialism, which itself arose from The Conquest of Europeans.
