Differences between the two Revolutions

  • The colonists didn't like the way the British ruled them, the French how they were treated by the upper classes
  • The American Revolution mostly stayed between the colonies and Britain, while the French Revolution involved at the end more countries than just France.
  • The French Revolutionaries were a lot more violent and bloodthirsty than the American ones

Similarities between the American and French Revolution

Lafayette: Hero of Two Worlds

  • The taxes that England imposes on the american colonies keep growing, which angers the colonialists
  • After the Tea Act in 1773, the famous Boston Tea Party happens and several crates of tea are thrown into the sea.
  • In 1774 the Declaration of Indipendence is signed
  • After several battles, the war ends in 1783, with the American victory.

  • Lafayette was born in 1757 in Chavaniac-Lafayette.
  • In 1777 he arrives in America and joins the Revolution and will leave in 1789 to go back to France
  • He tries to vouch for the opinion of the Third Estate
  • He was involved in the slaughter of Champ de Mars
  • A year after retiring, he will have a tumultuous late period of life.
  • He will die in 1834 due to an illness
