Who is Horatio?
Horatio is known to be a smart young man. He is considerably Hamlet's best friend and is first introduced to asses the "ghost" of old King Hamlet

Although Horatio's character isn't developed, he plays an important role in the play. Horatio is a very smart and dependable man, he serves as a confirmation of Hamlet's visions and ideas. Because Horatio sees the ghost, we can assume that it really is there and isn't Hamlet's imagination. Without Horatio, Hamlet's sanity would be in doubt
In the end, as Horatio contemplates suicides as his best friend lays dying, he is given the task to go on and tell the story of young prince Hamlet. Unlike Hamlet, Horatio accepts Hamlet's dying plea and rejects what his emotions are telling him to do, he acts rationally and doesn't let Hamlet's death end his own life as well. This is what makes Horatio a much cooler guy than Hamlet
Horatio's other role
Horatio serves as Hamlet's communication to the audience. Apart from Hamlet's soliloquies, Horatio is the only person Hamlet talks to, which gives the viewers an insight to what and how exactly Hamlet is feeling
