excessive food intake, irritability, childishness, disorientation, hallucinations, and an abnormally uninhibited sex drive... these symptoms may be related to a malfunction of the hypothalamus and thalamus (these parts of brain govern appetite and sleep)

no definitive treatment rather than pharmacotherapy... stimulant pills including amphetamines, methylephenidate (to make more alert), melatonin (to make sleepy), carbamazepain (to try and regulate episodes), vitamin D, modafinin

recurring, but reversible periods of excessive sleep (up to 20 hours a day). symptoms occur as "episodes" and normally last a few days to a few weeks, are often abrupt and may be associated with flu-like symptoms.

What Is KLS?

medical community does not know exactly what causes KLS... as said before it relates to a malfunction in the hypothalamus and thalamus... viral and autoimmune systems causative factors have been suggested due to the fact that many KLS patients also suffer flu-like symptoms... infections can also act as a trigger for people who have a genetic disposition towards KLS

KLS Syndrome stands for Kleine-Levin Syndrome. Also known as the sleeping beauty syndrome, it is a rare sleep disorder characterized by the persistent episomic hypersomnia and cognitive or mood changes.

Who can get KLS?

patients normally start around teens or early young adulthood... both females and males can be affected however it predominantly affects males (over 2/3 of cases occur in males)

Can KLS be prevented?

no... currently there are no known measures to prevent KLS for the EXACT cause is unknown. it also does not help that there are no genetic markers of the disease identified.

Risk Factors?

these risk factors are commonly associated with KLS:

  • Family history of KLS
  • Severe brain damage such as due to a head trauma
  • Severe depression
  • Liver failure due to excessive alcohol intake
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Infections such as infectious mononucleosis
