How Many Animals Were Saved?

The Best Friend Organization reported that over 4000 went through them during and right after Katrina.

Also Katrina Dog Rescue(largest pet rescue operation in history)reported more than 250000 pets were abandoned during Katrina. The organization was able to

save 8500 animals Katrina.

But less than 1000 animal were

reunited with their families.

Wildlife in Zoos

The New Orleans zoo in general was pretty prepared, but they did end up losing 3/4 of the fish in the Aquarium of the Americas. Also they managed to lose one of their crocodiles. But the zoo didn't take a lot of water damage so it could have definitely been a lot worse.

How Officials/Police Dealt with the Animals

The police simply told the home owners, often at gun point, to leave their animals because the animals will fend for themselves.

Many people even saw the police shooting animals to "put them out of their misery"

Why Couldn't Help Get In?

Well, as bad as it might sound, the government and state were unprepared for this event.

This is how The Washington Post put it, "President Bush down disregarded ample warnings of to New Orleans and did not execute emergency plans or share information as it would have saved lives.".

So basically the government was sitting back pointing fingers while New Orleans was suffering.

Wildlife

Animal Help

The wildlife was very disturbed; most trees fell over due to the hurricane leaving many species of birds homeless. In addition land animals were obviously displaced and killed as well.

Also a whopping 9 million fish were killed in the hurricane.

Not just the household pets were affected by the storm.

Many organizations helped to save these animals in need such as:

ASPCA, International Fund for Animal Welfare, American Humane Association, Code 3 Association, United Animals Nations, American Veterinary Medical Foundation, PetSmart Charities, and The Humane Society of the United States.

Although, only a couple of these foundations were allowed to go into New Orleans to help. But after they were allowed these organizations helped.
