Passing Periods...

Too Short?

By Aleah Amelio, Sarah Glass, Mallory Moffett, and Taylor Schupbach

The distance to the 8-1 team area is about 91 meters. And it takes about 78 seconds to get there. The distance to the 8-2 locker area is 103 meters. And it takes 83 seconds to get there. For the 6-1 locker

area it took about 36 seconds and the distance is

66 meters. The distance to the 7-1 locker area is about 29 meters and the time it takes to get there

is 32 seconds. To get to the gym it takes about 120 seconds and the distance to the gym is 78 meters. The auditorium is about 71 seconds away and 71 meters. To get to or from the library takes 78 seconds and is 67 meters away. The Cafeteria is about 61 seconds away and the distance is 61 meters. Lastly, the band hall takes 81 seconds to get to, and is 103 meters away. The measurements going to be the same every time, it all depends on were you sit, where you are going and how fast you are walking.

~Open locker (23 seconds)

~Exchange books (34 seconds)

~Bathroom (about 1 minute)

~Water fountain (25 seconds)

~Talk to teacher (about 45 seconds)

~Crowd of people (about 1 minute)

In conclusion, students do want and need longer passing periods. An extra minute would be okay. This would make the passing periods 4 minutes long, and that will give us time to get our books, go to the bathroom, get a drink, and walk to our class in time. Being late can cause you to miss a small portion of the class. Also, it will show a better attendance record. If you have several "tardies" for different classes then you will be moved further in the 5-Step Process for unneeded reasons. If an extra minute is added to our passing periods, students will have less tardies and be able to attend the entire class.

Conclusion

Recommendations

We think that if we had more ways, places, and longer passing periods to get to class. So maybe let us use the back stair case or extend our passing periods to 4 minutes.

Data Gathering Outline

SURVEY

We plan to gather our data my timing how long it takes to get from one place to another. The starting point was always the 7-1 science room, but we walked to several different teams and classes. We would also time how long it took to go through other variables.

Aleah and Sarah took a survey of the 6th grade students and teachers. Our results matched our hypothesis. We thought that the majority would think we need more time in the passing periods. Our results were:

172 people out of 202 wanted longer,

30 people wanted them to stay the same.

That is 85% vs. 15% that means most of 6th grade thinks we need longer times.

Variables

Main Idea

Speeds

The speeds varied for every place we went to. To the 8-1 locker area we walked an average of 78 mpm (meters per minute). To the 8-2 locker area we walked about 84 mpm. To 6-1 it was also 78 mpm.

7-1 was about 54 mpm and the gym 39 mpm. To the auditorium it was an average of 61 mpm. The library was 57 mpm and the cafeteria is about 50 mpm. And lastly the band hall was 85 mpm. Please keep in mind that there are no variables factored in.

The main idea of this experiment was to figure out if Heineman Middle School needs longer passing periods. Our current passing period time is 3 minutes long. In those 3 minutes, you have to go to your locker, exchange books, go to the bathroom, get a drink of water, and maybe even talk to a teacher. Our guess is that you can not do all of these tasks in less that 3 minutes to be on time to class.

Anticipated output

Measurements

We think that we would need more time. We also anticipate that all variables, such as slow people, stairs, locker problems, ect., will add more time. We expect the times will vary with places and distances. So yes, we anticipate that we will need more time.
