The Yamasee tribe of the Southeast

Subjugation of the Yamasee

Current issues: The Passing of Chief Running Buck

An example of subjugation, which occurred to the Yamasee, was before the Yamasee War of 1715 when the settlers were taking advantage of the Yamasee tribe. The settlers would take advantage of the Yamasee by raising the prices on items that were traded between them and by introducing rum. The yamasee called rum, fire water and was supposed to be used to gain trust between the settlers and the tribe, but instead the settlers used it to take advantage of the women of the Yamasee. As this went on the Yamasee became infuriated and could not put up with the settlers anymore, thus setting off the Yamasee War of 1715. The war started off by the council of the tribe voting on the annihilation of the settlers, but unfortunately later on the Yamasee were ambushed, defeated, and sent to the Salkehatchie area where they were killed.

Brief History 'bout Yamasee

Yamasee. means unkown, but the Muskogee have translated it, giving it the meaning of "gentle"The Yamasee Indians were part of the Muskhogean language.

Some of the earliest Yamasee people were mostly located on Ocmulgee River, not very far from the Oconee. The Yamasee seemed to extend northeastward and way beyond Savannah, Florida, Alabama and South Carolina.

The yamasee had towns, Upper which consisted of Huspaw, Pocotaligo, Sadkeche, Tomatly, Yoa. Lower Town consisted of, Altamaha, Chasee, Oketee, Pocasabo, Tulafina.

Yamasee people are mostly known for their Yamasee war. It marrked the Indian and White History in the Southeast, Once the Spanish decided to settle in, it caused the Yamasee tribes to move out and head north(SC). In 1715 the Yamasee formed a confederationn and they struck the white settlers in South carolina.

Huneds were killed, Houses burned down and livestock was slaughtered. Many scared settlers fled to NC, Many others went to Virginia. It was a huge turning point when yamasee took the help from Virginia and traded weapons but that wasnt a good idea because it backfired on them and they got pushed back down even further to north Florida. At the 17th Century a stroke was used when paddling canoes along the coast of GA and SC and FL. this was known as the "Yamasee Stroke" The war had a huge impact on the economy, because of the loss of ivestock, many many farms had disapeared, turning most of SC into forests which would later be traded with england. Later the economy developed rice and Indigo as their primary products.

So when the question comes up about Yamasee relationship with other settlers, They did not get along at all and started wars with the ones that they did not want there. My guess is that they felt threatened. Even though their name means gentle when it came to yamasee they were also known as "the most fierce warriors of all the native tribes."
