Rube Goldberg Gumball

Machine Project

By:

Austin, Garth, Josh, Mitch,

Reid, Reuben, and Thien

The Problem Statement:

To celebrate Goldberg's 50th anniversary, in honor

of his brother Rube Goldberg, Vex Goldburg would like us to make a complex machine made of vex

parts that when triggered by a drop of a

quarter, dispenses candy.

Design Statement:

Design, build, and test a complex

machine when triggered by a drop

of a quarter dispenses candy.

Criteria and Constraints

  • Presentation on May 23rd
  • Must be durable and repeatable
  • Cannot be bigger than two base platforms in vex kit
  • Made of vex parts
  • Each of the six simple machines must be represented at least once
  • Each team must have a minimum of 2 different simple machines
  • Feed into and trigger next team's sub assembly
  • Cannot touch machine after quarter is dropped
  • No maximum number of steps
  • Loose and flying objects stay in machine area
  • 3 additional items on rapid prototype machines All combined no larger than 10' x 10' x4'
  • No life or dead animals
  • No explosives, electronics, or hazardous materials
  • Must complete task as described in challenge

We started by beginning research before the

major part of the project. We were to have twelve

pages of research for Vex parts, the six simple

machines, rube goldberg machines, and possible

candy dispensers.

Here are some of the pages of research

that were collected by our team prior to

the project.

Here are the vex parts.

Next each person came up with ways to make the candy dispensers. We used decision matrices and combined ideas to make our machine.

All parts were made in the CAD system. We then assembled them in inventor. We made exploded views and submitted the parts list.

We did have problems when assembling the parts. The custom parts weren't done on time and we had to change the lever three times. We made the changes and fixed the design.

On May 22nd, we finished the parts list and began assembling. The next morning we came in early and finished and prepared for this presentation.

And finally today here is the gumball machine.

The End

We conducted research on Rube Goldberg and his machines, vex parts, the six simple machines, and candy dispensers.

Here are the vex parts that we're allowed to use when making the gumball project.
