Notice here that it doesn’t say restate, but rather explain. That involves going into “why” and “how” the writer is saying what s/he is saying. So phrases like:

The author presents the scenario that

The author contrasts this with

The author supports this claim by

The author follows this with an explanation of why

The author outlines multiple example of

The author applies his claim to

The author addresses the counterargument by

You still want to move chronologically through the text, using specific examples along the way, but those “summary” examples shouldn’t exist without explanation as well.

While Reading:

Establish the/ a theme connection among sources (jot down possibilities as you go)

Identify (jot down) the unique perspective/ attitude/ purpose of each source

After Reading:

Web possible arguments to make that are not overly broad, but not so narrow that you run out of things to talk about.

While webbing, make sure to list the provided sources you could use as support for each major idea AND other outside information you could bring in.

Do not start writing until you have created a web/ outline that includes all major ideas you’ll discuss as well as what evidence/ support you will use for each
