Summary

  • The sun God comes up and lights the world.

  • The sun sets in the west and travels back east.

  • Starts the journey over again in the morning.

  • Both myths are similar, but from different cultures.

Ra's Journey

Comparison

  • Every night Ra died and was swallowed by Nut. He was then reborn from her in the morning.
  • The "Barque of a million years" was the boat Ra used to sail the sky. There are two forms of this boat.
  • The first boat was "Matet" meaning "becoming stronger" which Khepri rode.
  • Ra rode in the boat named "Semktet" meaning "the growing weak boat".
  • At the end of the day Ra died, and was swallowed by Nut.
  • In the underworld Ra traveled through the 12 hours of night time.

During those 12 hours Ra has to battle his enemy Apep.

  • Ra usually defeats the giant snake.
  • In the morning Ra will be reborn and the process will start over and repeat.

The Forms of Ra

  • Both myths explain how the sun rises.

  • They both explain how the Gods "drive the sun."

  • Both explain what happens to the sun once it has set.

  • Explains what happens to the God on his voyage.
  • There are three forms of Ra.

  • Almost always referred to as Ra.

  • In the morning he is Khepri.

  • At noon Khepri turns into Ra, the most powerful form out of the three.

  • Then around sunset Ra shifts into Temu.

Helios -

  • Wears purple or golden robes.
  • Crowned with a gold aureole (crown).
  • Very handsome beardless man with golden hair, and shining eyes.

Ra -

  • Body of a man and head of a hawk.
  • Wears a headdress, with a sun disc above his head.

Helios-

  • Greek sun God.
  • Son of Titans Hyperion and Theia.
  • Has two sisters Eos Goddess of Dawn, and Selene Goddess of the moon.

Ra -

  • Egyptian sun God.
  • King of all Egyptian Gods.

Apep -

  • Ra's chief enemy.
  • A giant serpent.

Nut -

  • Egyptian Goddess of the sky.

Helios's Journey

  • At Dawn Eos opens the eastern gates of the sky.
  • Helios rides out of the gates in his golden chariot.
  • His chariot is pulled by his four winged fire breathing horses.
  • The God drives carefully, so he does not scorch the earth.
  • At noon Helios is at the climax of his journey in the sky, and starts to descend towards the west.
  • He then enters the gates of evening in the west, and Selene takes over as the moon.
  • While Selene works, Helios floats back east in a golden boat.
  • When he reaches the east, the process starts all over again.
