Major Earthquake

Nevada

  • Three people injured
  • More than 20 buildings heavily damaged
  • Almost 700 buildings slightly damaged

Earthquake Project

Magnitude - 6.0

First we made a cube for our base, then another cube on top of that, both with cross braces to support the structure.

One more cube on top of that and we had the height requirement. Later on we made a small platform for the egg to sit, then made a dome, to surround the egg.

This is our structure

Tension

Tension is the state of being stretched tight

Cross Braces

  • Used to make walls stronger
  • Helps a structure keeps it's shape while it's being shaken

Twisting

Our Building Plan

Base Isolators

  • Placed between a building and it's foundation
  • Made of flexible material
  • Any waves from the earthquake that does reach the building is slower and smoother

Torsion is an action

that twists a material

Our plan was to make a structure out of spaghetti and marshmallows that could hold an egg during the shake table test, for at least 10 seconds.

Shear Walls

  • Add strength to the structure
  • Walls contain steel supports

Our building plan included making a big base, cross braces on each level, and a flat platform with a dome over it to hold the egg.

Stress

Stress is the force exerted when an object when an object presses on, pulls on, or pushes against another object.

Compression

A force that squeezes a material together

Shapes

Sliding

When you add pressure to

the top of the triangle, the

two sides squeeze together

and the bottom side pulls

apart.

When you add pressure to

the arch with external

supports, the external supports

push back both sides of the

arch to prevent it from spreading

apart.

Shear is a force that

causes parts of material to slide past one another in opposite directions

Earthquake Resistant Structures

When you add pressure

to the square with the cross

brace going in a diagonal

direction , the cross brace

prevents the square from

toppling over.
