Nehemiah Griego

By. Melanie Lee

"...he was ________ by homicidal and suicidal thoughts..."

- This makes Griego sound almost pitied unlike other articles that plainly state he was not in a normal mental state.

plagued

"...planned to go to an area Walmart and shoot _________ people..."

- The same article contradicts their previous pitied attitude, and states he was going to kill innocent people as opposed to just people or individuals.

"Investigators say a 15-year-old boy in New Mexico murdered his _______ family on Saturday..."

but

Fox

- Though subtle, the world "entire" adds emphasis. (i.e. He killed his whole ENTIRE family?)

massacre

"..five dead all together... five including the suspect's brother who was ____ nine years old..."

- Emphasizes how young the sibling was when killed.

tragedy

"...how the Griego ________ might affect the legislative session... family _________..."

- Thought the shooting is tragic, such words give a sort of emotional bias, especially if repeated. Instead, words such as "event" or, plainly, "shooting" should be used. This article was about gun laws, and giving the shooting a name like "The Griego Tragedy" may cause bias.

Conclusion

Overall, all sources showed similar

articles, some even having identical stories.

There were a lot of fluff adjectives like "horrific tragedy" "terrible" and "bloodied"

The articles stated the basics (when/where/who), and had more straight, dry facts. However the video used quite a bit of the above "fluff" words. It focused mainly on gun laws.

This source was more in depth with details and the chronology of the events. It dabbled in with gun laws, but quickly went back to the story and its effect on the community. (pathos)

CNN focused more on the law aspects such as Griego's trial, and the investigation of the shooting. Many quotes from the area's fire department chief and other law officials were included. There were a ton of heavy, weighty words uses. (ethos)

All sources talked about how Griego's father was a gangster-turned-pastor, and how he was loved throughout the community. The

sources also speak of how family members of the victims

- These "fluff" words make Griego sound criminal to another degree.

"...He even sent his girlfriend a picture of his ______ mother..."

- I find the use of the word "slain" a bit odd. Though the definition deems it appropriate, I usually see the word associated with fictional figures like dragons and monsters, not with real life entities like murders and other news.
