Florence, Venice, and Genoa

Florence

Florence began as a republic

In 1435 the Medici family took control of the city. They made Florence the centre of the Reniassance in Italy. Cosimo de Medici controlled the government in Florence for 60 years.

Florence was located on Arno River in North-Central Italy

They organized themselves into groups called "guilds"

They traded silk and wool

Da Vinci, Botticelli, Amerigo Vespucci, Giuliano de Medici, and Machiavelli came from florence

Florence was the centre of culture and highly successful bankers and silk and wool merchants in the Renaissance

The florin influenced the Renaissance a lot because it became the standard currency all across Europe

Florence is famous for the Duomo, Florence's Cathedral, it's Uffizi Gallery, and the Academia Gallery, which has the Statue of David in it

Venice

Venice had a very stable government

Venice was a republic. The head was called the Doge

In 1297 Venice turned into an oligarchy

Venice was more successful in sea trade than any other city-state. They brought goods back from the East by their merchant navy

Venice was located between the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and western Europe.

Venice was famous for its university that promoted the study of science, medicine, and law

Venice is also famous for the Grand Canal. It is two miles long and 350 feet wide.

Venice had groups called scuole. They met for prayer sessions and ccollected money for different causes

Venice influenced the Renaissance by being the first Italian city-state to use the mechanical printing press

Marco Polo, Sansovino, Tintoretto, Bellini, and Manutius were the famous artists and thinkers from Venice

Genoa

Genoa had a wall around it to protect the people from attack

Genoa was a republic

Genoa was a really good place for trade routes

Genoa is located in northwest Italy on the Tyrrhenean Sea

The Grimaldi family have ruled the Principality of Monico for more than 700 years

Doria, Grimaldi, and Columbus were from Genoa

Genos is well known for the Piazza de Ferrari where the Opera and the Palace of the Doges are. Also a house where Christopher Columbus was said to have been born

All these city-states started as a republic

A city state is a state containing a sovereign city

The Treaty of Lodi was a treaty made at Lodi, Italy between Milan and Venice on April 9, 1454. They stood against Milan, Nepals, and Florence, who were in an allience. But the five city-states allied together when a foreign enemy threatened Venice.

Current examples of city-states are: Athens, Sparta, Singapore, Monaco, and Vatican City
