Carrots

By Eric Johnson

When They are Ready

  • some people actually have them grow during the winter and put hay over it so they don't get frosted
  • Mature carrots will be ready in about 2 months
  • carrots are recommended that they should be at lest a few inches away from each other because their roots are so big

Used for bait

  • The biggest concern for carrots is carrot rust flyes. The larvae attacks the roots of the carrots, and they even eat tunnels through the carrots.

  • Another concern is desease in the carrot
  • When people go hunting for deer, a lot of people use carrots to attract deer and they would come over to eat some
  • Carrots are also used for bait for other animals such as bears and rabbits

Carrot production

Transportation

  • Carrots are grown primarily in Montcalm, Newaygo, and Oceana counties in western Michigan and in Lapeer County in southeast Michigan.
  • Carrots are transported by trucks that deliver carrots all around the country
  • Approximately 75% of carrots are grown for fresh market and 25% for processing.
  • Under favorable conditions, processing carrots can yield 35-40 tons per acre, and fresh market production may exceed 15 tons per acre.

Michigan Carrots

Where they are grown

  • In 2011, Michigan produces 6.8 million pounds of carrots for fresh use worth $7.6 million dollars
  • This made Michigan the second highest carrot producing state in the country
  • ● Michigan ranks third nationally in the production of fresh market carrots, producing 3.9% of the total U.S. commodity
  • ● Processing carrots can, on good fields, yield 35-40 tons per acre, and fresh market production may exceed 15 tons per acre.
  • Carrots are mostly grown in the thumb and the western side of Michigan

Carrots are best grown in well drained soil, such as muck, which is a moist, and wet soil

  • Carrots are extremely sensitive to environmental conditions such as High temperature, and even soil compaction, which would make them rot and would be bad vegtables
  • Carrots can be sown from early Spring through mid-summer
