Their reason for leaving home, like most people's at the time, was to acquire inexpensive farm land. The details of the journey they took are unknown; all we know is that they arrived to Halifax by boat. They then traveled directly to Bengough Saskatchewan, which is a southeastern prairie town. Straight away, they bought farm land and became grain farmers with a small amount of livestock

George and Sophie Prescott

Online, I did find out that the last name Hammer is not only English originated, but German and Jewish as well. It was most likely given as a nickname related to his occupation; my ancestor would then begin to be known by that name, and from there the name would spread.

I decided to learn about my dad’s side of the family, more specifically his grandmother and grandfathers journey on his dad’s side. I picked this particular side simply because I’ve always been interested in where my last name came from and who married who in order for it to be. My only resource for this information was my father since my grandfather passed away before I was born and my grandmother, living too far away with a difficult calling schedule. I searched online for information about my family and unfortunately found very little to no information.

Fred Hammer

Sheffield, England in early 1900's

The Prescott and Hammer family lived there for a number of years, aside from Ronald, who went back to fight in WWI and was killed soon after. Hilda and Fred, once married, had one son (my grandfather) which they named Ronald, in memory of Hilda’s brother. George married but never had kids and Percy never married; therefore the Prescott name in Canada is no longer living.

My great grandmother and her family originated from England and emigrated from there in 1906 from Sheffield, England. My great grandmother, Hilda Prescott, emigrated with her family which included her mother and father (George and Sophie), her three brothers (George, Percy, Ronald), and her boyfriend Fred Hammer, which soon after immigrating, became her husband.
