Attending to two events at one time

With-it-ness

Teachers are aware of whats going on in all parts of the classroom at all times.

It is important strategy as it help the class run smoothly and prevents students from being off task.

Disruptive class

+

This also includes distractions from outside the classroom such as notes from the office or students walking through the hallways.

Classroom Applications

  • Teacher is continually aware of all sights and sounds in classroom
  • Arranging classroom so students are in eyesight
  • Staying aware of individual students and/or groups during busy class day
  • Briefly acknowledging student misbehavior at first detection to let the student and the class know that the teacher is aware, thus preventing an escalation of the misbehavior
  • Stick to your classroom expectations

When a teacher corrects the misbehavior in one individual student, often this positively influences the behavior of other nearby students.

The effect is greater when the teacher clearly names the unacceptable behavior of the student and provides the reasons why the behavior is unacceptable.

Effective Transitions

Engaged class

Crazy class

include keeping lessons moving with avoiding abrupt changes.

1. Group Alerting

2. Momentum

3. Smoothness

Group Alerting

Momentum

: the force or flow of the lesson

Smoothness

is where the teacher keeps the learning activities going without:

  • being distracted
  • interrupting students while they are working
  • going off on unrelated tangents

Teachers who use group alerting are ensuring that students are kept 'on their toes'.

This encourages students to remain engaged in the lesson

Ways to use keep momentum:

-Correct students quickly on misconceptions

-have students move from one activity to next without a long transition

-Do not stay to long on one part of the lesson, unless instruction is needed

-Keep lesson moving briskly

Grand Discussion: randomly calling on students is an effective use of Group Alerting

Smoothness then refers to a teacher’s ability to preserve instructional time by eliminating many of the common barriers to a smooth class transition.

JACOB KOUNIN

Educational theorist who studied how teachers are able to manage a classroom; while helping and hindering classroom behavior.

An effective lesson engages the student along the entire class period

This management is the teachers ability to manage smooth transitions between learning activities.

The Kounin Model

  • Ripple Effect Theory
  • With-it-ness
  • Overlapping
  • Movement and Smoothness

Pros:

Cons:

1. Kounin's strategies can be used in a variety of classrooms

2. Encourages mutual respect between teacher and student

1. Kounin's theory provides information about misbehavior, but regrets to provide techniques for discipline

2. The model is difficult to put into action, especially for first year teachers. Takes time to establish well class management

3. Not all of these theories my work in your classroom due to learning diversities

3. Students are less likely to 'test the teachers limits' when a teacher has exhibited withiness and each of these theories
