How is the DRA Given?

  • Reading Engagement Survey: Self-assessment
  • Oral Reading Fluency: Running Record- Pre-selected text from 2-3 leveled books
  • Comprehension:Oral or written re-tell-Oral or written questionnaire
  • Teacher scoring: Intervention, Instructional, Independent, Advanced-Fluency and comprehension scored, not engagement survey-Miscue types are counted in scoring
  • Administered 2-3 times per year
  • one-on-one
  • takes 30 to 45 minutes per student
  • during instruction time
  • DRA2 is used in Special Education, and recorded in IEPs
  • If text level is too high the assessment is stopped and continued at a later date with a lower level text.

What is a DRA test?

Assessment

A developmental reading assessment that enables teachers to systematically observe, record and evaluate changes in student's reading performance.

It is administered individually to students by teachers

and/or reading specialists. Students read a selection (or selections) and then retell what they have read

to the examiner. As the levels increase, so does the difficulty level for each selection.
