Who is involved in the conflict; how are they connected and what are they bringing to the conflict?

They bring their:

Emotions

Values

Needs

Identities

Perceptions/misperceptions of self/other

Communication skills/lack of

Patterns of interaction

Psychological state

Attitudes

Fears, anxieties, hopes

Social status

In order to understand the people involved, must be able to address these aspects of the person, and understand the relationship between the disputants

Each piece of the triangle impacts the other

Each piece can be addressed by the mediator to help resolve the conflict

  • How is information handled?
  • How are the parties communicating?
  • What norms do they bring as to how to behave in conflict?
  • Are they cooperative or coercive?
  • Who has authority/what roles do they have?

What are the underlying needs and interests?

What are the facts?

Why is there conflict?

What is the history of the conflict?

The process is where a mediator can provide structure, control who speaks when, diminish threats, etc.
