Also known as the Arusha Accords.
Intended to end the civil war in Rwanda.
On one side... the Rwandan Government
On the other... the rebels, Rwandan Political Front
Talks began in July of 1992 and lasted nearly one year.
The treaty was designed so that the current government and the Rwandan Political Front would share power.
It is said that even during talks, he never intended to follow the outcome. President Habyarimana was very opposed to sharing power with the rebels.
However, he did sign the treaty.
The problem was that the Hutu extremist population did not support these peace talks. Some of these people were high-ranking government officials.
These powerful people then began organizing the genocide that would ravage through Rwanda in 1994. They targeted anyone who supported peace between the government and the RPF, even other more moderate Hutus.
In 1994, the President's plane was shot down, and he was killed. It is unknown who exactly did this, but it strongly suggests that the Radical Hutus had decided to get rid of their President simply because he signed the peace treaty.
