The TTI Exchange 2015

#TTIX2015

Research Quality:

Approaches, Outreach and Impact

The first plenary: Research Quality for think tanks.

The final day called for reflection and consolidation of discussions which had taken place across the exchange.

The third day was designed to foster innovation and practical collaborations going forward beyond the exchange.

Day two kicked off with the launch of three films, from different think tanks, illustrating the research to policy process.

Day Three:

Impact

Participants were welcomed into a city full of history, culture, breathtaking architecture...

And importantly, there was time for a few laughs as well.

  • To share perspectives on how research quality can lead to think tank impact.
  • To share knowledge, practice, and experience on how think tanks are ensuring rigour and quality research while maintaining policy relevance.
  • To create awareness and exposure to a range of different approaches, methods, and tools for strengthening research quality.
  • To identify potential areas of capacity development and related support for research quality in think tanks.
  • To promote networking and collaboration between think tanks and other research to policy stakeholders.

...and to look ahead to potential collaborations in the future.

The exchange had clear objectives:

It provided a chance to look back over the three days...

Key topics discussed were those which looked at the interplay between internal and external influences on quality.

Participants looked at the role of research ethics...

...and ensured that voices were heard.

...and snow.

The day aimed to:

The exchange began by looking at what 'research quality' means for think tanks and policymakers.

Day One:

Approaches

  • Provide and discuss practical approaches, tactics, and tools that strengthen the effectiveness of think tanks

  • Identify implications of a think tank’s context for the application of these approaches, tactics, and tools

  • Highlight potential pitfalls and ways of minimising risks which may arise when applying these approaches, tactics, and tools
  • Sharing different approaches to leverage think tanks’ research for impact
  • Highlighting ways in which think tanks can engage strategically with key audiences

1. Outreach Strategies

  • Sharing knowledge, practice, and experience on how think tanks are assuring research quality and rigour
  • Exploring ways in which TTI can support think tanks in strengthening their quality assurance mechanisms

Day two was structured around two main themes:

Day Two:

Outreach and Engagement

2. Quality Assurance mechanisms

...to build networks for knowledge sharing...

...giving individuals a chance to catch up on developments within the TTI community...

Facilitator, Valerie Traore, set a brisk pace for the three days.

and Peer Review for Research Quality Enhancement.

The TTI Exchange 2015 brought together up to 200 think tanks, donors, and other research-to-policy stakeholders in Istanbul, Turkey.

Individuals convened, between the 18th and 20th February, to discuss what research quality means for think tank impact, both in theory and in practice.

...to identify 'tangible take homes'...

It brought together key individuals...

Lots of snow.

In the warmth of the hotel, collaboration began.

Throughout the day participants looked at diversity, building multi-disciplinary research communities, evidence gap-maps and open data.

Real time discussions left a virtual legacy...

Outside the sessions, ideas could be shared in a social environment...

As well as exploring how think tanks can learn from each other.

An important aspect of the Exchange was the development of strategic networks across the community of think tanks.

and to look beyond the exchange.

The TTI exchange 2015 provided a space for shared learning.

...and the conversation continues on the TTI Dialogue Page.
