  • 62% of Tweens (age 11-14) who have been in a relationship say they know friends who have been verbally abused (called stupid, worthless, ugly, etc) by a boyfriend/girlfriend.
  • Only half of all Tweens (age 11-14) claim to know the warning signs of a bad/hurtful relationship.
  • one in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped, or physically hurt but a boyfriend or girlfriend
  • More than 1 in 4 teenage girls in a relationship (26%) report enduring repeated verbal abuse
  • 1 in 4 men and women have been victims of physical relationship violence within their lifetime
  • women between ages 16-24 are most commonly abused by an intimate partner
  • 85% of domestic violence victims are women
  • From 1994 to 2010, about 4 in 5 victims of intimate partner violence were female
  • Yet, most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police

  • Relationship Abuse is a pattern of abusive and coercive behaviors used to maintain power and control

  • Anyone can be the victim. However, people who have grown up in violent homes are more likely to suffer from this type of abuse

  • Varies; Usually when a person in the relationship gets too comfortable (post-honeymoon)

  • The abuser believes they have the right to control the person their dating (used to date).

Effects of Relationship Abuse

  • Identifying the signs of relationship abuse can be difficult, especially if the abuser uses subtle tactics to gain power and control.

Relationship abuse can happen to anyone. Any abuse can have both short and long term physical, mental, and emotional effects on a victim and the people around them.

1. Prevents contact and communication with friends and family.

2. Controls money and important identification.

3. Causes embarrassment.

4. Critical about survivors appearances and/or behavior.

5. Attempts to control what partner wears.

6. Has unrealistic expectations; likes partner to be available at all times.

7. Threatens to take kids away/hurt them.

8. In denial that abuse is not a big deal.

9. Plays mind games to place blame on the survivor.

10. Destroys property or threatens to kill pets.

11. Intimidates with weapons like knives or guns.

12. Shoves, slaps, chokes, hits, or forces sexual acts.

13. Threatens to commit suicide.
