Reciprocal

Innovator

Guided Discovery

The reciprocal coaching style is where the coach tells the students what to do but unlike the command style the students are allowed to make decisions about the session.

Advantages:

  • It works well with developed athletes
  • It is a good way of developing close relationships with athletes
  • It also develops communication

Disadvantage:

  • It is very time consuming
  • Wont work well with large teams

A good innovator would be Shane Sutton who was a coach with the British cycling team in Beijing 2008 he combined scientific data based technology with specific training methods to create a different way of training and also helped to develop a team mentality which helped the British team to massive success.

Jurgen Klopp

The guided discovery coaching style is where the students are in complete control of the session so they make all of the decisions and the coach is just there to mentor the students when needed.

Advantages:

  • It works best when used with experts or professional athletes
  • It helps to improve self-confidence
  • It can increase there understanding and develop athletes decision making as well as there motivation.

Disadvantages:

  • There is a lack of structure to the session
  • It can develop bad techniques
  • It also can take a lot of time to meet a goal or target

Roles of a coach

A coach has different roles in sport one of the roles would be to be an innovator this involves the coach search for new techniques to improve performance or to make the session more enjoyable. Another role would be to be a friend because a coach and a athlete will spend a lot of time together they will develop a bond so they will share positive and negative experiences. Also they will have to become a manager this will involve them being a leader, motivating there team and gain the respect of the athletes who play for them.

Command

Command style coaching is where the coach makes all the decisions and tells the students how and what to do and when to do it.

Advantages:

  • It is good for beginners when explaining basic skills and techniques
  • It is a good way of keeping large groups under control and keeping them safe.

Disadvantages:

  • It only works with simple skills in a small area
  • It is difficult to asses players skill level

Sir Alex Ferguson is a good example of a command style because he is a strict coach a he wants the players to play how he wants them to play.
