State of Matter

Physical or Chemical Change?

Melting chocolate to dip strawberries.

Using a magnet to separate sand & metal filings.

Rotting meat.

Fireworks exploding.

Arrangement of Atoms/Molecules

Crystalline: particles are arranged in an orderly, repeating pattern.

Amorphous: particles are arranged in a random way.

Mechanical Properties Continued

Elasticity: a solid's ability to be stretched and then return to its original size

Brittleness: tendency of a solid to crack or break before stretching very much.

Ductile: a solid's ability to be bent a relatively large amount without breaking.

Mechanical Properties

Strength: the ability of a solid object to maintain its shape even when force is applied.

Tensile Strength: measure of how much stress a material can withstand before breaking.

Hardness: measure of a solid's resistance to scratching.
